Retail - Not Just a Job in a Shop

Retail companies in New Zealand are offering school leavers and graduates career paths in Retail that include comprehensive training programs, financial bonus systems and attractive career advancement opportunities.

The Retail Industry once considered an industry with few career prospects is now perceived as an industry that provides many opportunities for customer-orientated people to achieve and progress.

A career path in Retail often begins with a casual sales assistant position while attending full-time education before progressing to a full-time retail position. From here a sales assistant can progress to Assistant Manager, Store Manager, and Area Manager, with more opportunities to move into Merchandising, Buying and State and National retail roles.

Peter Davis, Managing Director, Frontline Recruitment Group says, “More and more young people are realising what an attractive and diverse career path Retail can provide. The financial rewards are now on par with other industries, with retail often providing a faster rate of progression within a company.”

In the past retail has been viewed as a transitional job prior to commencing a ‘real career’. The term ‘job in a shop’ is becoming outdated as many young people join retail and often by the age of 20-21 are managing their own store. This has a lot to do with the growth of specialty retail since the early 1970’s. Many national retail chains have over 100 stores across New Zealand and this has created masses of opportunity for young people to develop their careers within the retail industry.

Frontline Retail’s 11th Annual Salary Guide for 2007 also indicates favourable salary conditions for retail workers. The guide is based on a survey of 5684 randomly selected retail candidates who have applied for retail positions with Frontline Retail.

“The survey reveals the exceptional career opportunities available within the retail industry with many retailers introducing traineeships and management development programs too assist their staff in developing a career in retail, rather than just a job” said Peter Davis.
